Frequently Asked Questions
A psychologist is a licensed professional trained in assessment, diagnosis, and therapy. A psychotherapist is trained to provide talk therapy and help clients with emotional, behavioural, or relational challenges, but may come from different educational backgrounds (for example, psychology, social work, or counselling). A counsellor typically provides support and guidance for specific issues or life challenges but may not have the same level of training in assessment or clinical diagnosis. At Alcove Psychology, all care is provided within the scope of professional regulations and ethical standards.
Many insurance plans cover services provided by psychologists or psychotherapists, but coverage varies depending on your provider and policy. It’s always best to check directly with your insurance company to see what your plan includes. We can provide receipts that clearly state the provider’s credentials so you can submit them for reimbursement.
The number of sessions varies for each person, depending on their goals, concerns, and history. Some clients notice changes after just a few sessions, while others benefit from longer-term support. In our first meetings, we’ll talk about your goals and revisit progress along the way so that therapy feels meaningful and responsive to your needs.
We require 48 hours’ notice to cancel or reschedule an appointment. This policy is in place because your session time is reserved just for you, and last-minute changes make it difficult to offer that spot to someone else who may be waiting for care. We understand that life happens, and we do our best to be flexible when unexpected situations arise, but consistent notice helps us provide the best possible service to all clients.
Both options provide the same level of care and support. In-person sessions take place in our office, where you have the benefit of a dedicated, private space. Virtual sessions happen over a secure video platform, offering convenience and flexibility — whether you’re at home, at work, or simply prefer not to commute. Some clients choose one format, while others mix both, depending on what works best for their schedule and comfort.
Yes. What you share in therapy stays private, with a few exceptions required by law (such as if there’s a risk of harm to yourself or others, or concerns about child protection). Confidentiality is essential for creating a safe space where you can speak openly and honestly.
Most sessions are 50 minutes long. Many clients choose to start with weekly sessions, then adjust the frequency over time as they feel more comfortable or see progress. Together, we’ll set a pace that feels right for you and your goals.
The first session is about getting to know each other. I’ll ask questions about your concerns, your history, and what you’d like to work on. It’s also a chance for you to get a sense of my style and decide if it feels like a good fit. By the end of the session, we’ll begin to outline goals and next steps.
Therapy is working when you start to notice shifts in how you think, feel, or respond to challenges. Sometimes that looks like feeling lighter after sessions, setting a boundary more easily, or being kinder to yourself in difficult moments. We’ll check in regularly on your progress so you feel supported and aligned with your goals.
